Young Peoples Panels

Young People's Panels in Scotland

A total of 32 Young People's Panels were established in each of Scotland's local authority areas which were made up of 11-25 year old volunteers. The panels  were responsible for identifying local funding priorities for young people and making recommendations to a national decision making committee for the Big Lottery  Fund -Young People's Fund.

Volunteer Development Scotland was responsible for the delivery of the panels in partnership with the Volunteer Centre Network Scotland

  • Young People's Panels ran from 2005-2008
  • Formal training was delivered to a total of 500 young people throughout Scotland
  • Over 250 funding applications were considered
  • Nearly  £16 million of funding awarded to local projects
  • 234 young people achieved formal accreditation in Participative Democracy for their contribution to Young People's Panels
  • 70% of eligible Panel Members used this opportunity to gain formal recognition for their volunteering experience through the MV Award
  • Many of the volunteers have accessed further volunteering opportunities as a direct result of their involvement in Young People's Panels

"It's a fantastic initiative, which not only gives young people a voice but offers many from a non-academic background, the opportunity of gaining accreditation and is proving a great success"
