The Commission on the Future Delivery of Public Services - Call for Evidence
There is a growing realisation in Scotland of the need for a reform of public services particularly in the context of rising demand at a time of decreasing resources. Following debates on the recent Scottish Budget the Scottish Government has established the Commission for the Future Delivery of Public Services. The Commission has issued a call for submissions of evidence. Volunteer Development Scotland has responded to this with a strong call for the greater involvement of citizens in the design and delivery of public services: a key part of this is the cultural change (the hearts and minds) necessary to make public agencies more open to volunteers.

VDS has responded to this consultation by saying volunteering should be viewed as a very practical thing people can do to help maintain and/or improve their mental health and the mental health of others. It needs to be better recognised as an action which can contribute towards better community wellbeing, solidarity and social cohesion.

VDS has responded to this consultation by calling for a 9 point action plan to be put in place in order that people on welfare benefits can decide if volunteering could help them back into the paid labour market and/or better cope with periods of unemployment.
